We are a mixed gender group for 6 to 14 1/2 year olds that operates in the North Bristol area, in Winterbourne, and we are part of the Cotswold Edge scout district. Winterbourne is part of South Gloucestershire.

The 1st Winterbourne Down & Buryside Scout Group were initially two separate scout groups formed in the 1960’s that amalgamated together in the 1980’s to form the current group. The group consists of a Beavers colony, (boys and girls 6 to 8 years old), a Cub Pack (boys and girls 8 to 10 1/2 years old), and the Scout Troop (boys and girls 10 1/2 to 14 years old). We currently have approximately 50 children in the group at this time and are looking to increase the size of the group. The youngsters come from a wide variety of backgrounds and represent all of the local schools. We were the only mixed gender scout group in the area.

The scout association is clear about its purpose. To help young people achieve their full physical, inellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Even if we can’t solve all of the problems in the world, we can help to make it a better place. We do this by helping young people to develop as active members of the community.

There are seven leaders to run the group and an executive committee that helps to organise events and raise funds. The committee meets at least quarterly or sooner if required and also holds an AGM for parents and district review and questions. The group has a Group Scout Leader (GSL) who represents the scouting side of the group to the various district and national bodies. The GSL and the other six leaders run the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The Exec Committee, consisting of six parents and the leaders organise events and fund raising. The Exec Committee also has three elected positions, a Chair, Treasurer and secretary (non-Leaders).

The Group meets in the Scout HQ which is owned by the group. It has been rebuilt over many years as funds have been raised.
